This post is the first in a series called Loving the Skin You Are In, but before we can work towards our skin feeling loved we need to understand our skin type and workout what routine and products are best for our unique skin and lifestyle. Let’s start with discussing how our skin is layered and why we would want to take care of our skin.
The Layers of the Skin
The skin, our body’s largest organ, is a complex and remarkable structure composed of three main layers that work harmoniously to protect, regulate, and interact with the external environment.
The outermost layer, known as the epidermis, serves as the first line of defense, shielding us from environmental hazards and pathogens. The epidermis is the layer that the majority our skincare products work on. Made up of both living and dead skin cells. The face has 4 layers within the epidermis. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, a layer rich in blood vessels, nerve endings, and essential structural elements like collagen and elastin. This layer provides strength, flexibility, and support to the skin. The deepest layer, the hypodermis, houses fat cells that act as insulation, cushioning, and energy storage. Together, these layers form a dynamic and resilient barrier, allowing the skin to fulfil its role in maintaining our overall health and well-being.
Our skin is usually the first area we notice problems when our health and wellness are suffering. Ask yourself; “Is your skin happy?” Key indicators of unhappy skin is tight, irritated, blemished, itchy and dehydrated skin. The majority of skincare products work on the epidermis but products that are lightweight with smaller molecules are thought to work on the deeper layers of the skin.
Why Take Care of Your Skin?
Taking care of your skin is important for several reasons, both for your health and well-being as well as for your appearance. Here are some key reasons why skin care is important:
Protection from the Environment: The skin is the body’s first line of defence against harmful elements in the environment and proper skin care can help maintain its integrity, resilience and ability to protect us.
Healthy Appearance: Healthy skin looks better. A well-moisturised and cared-for complexion appears smoother, more radiant, and youthful. Good skin care can boost self-confidence and self-esteem.
Maintaining Skin Hydration: Proper skin care helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance, preventing it from becoming too dry or too oily. This is essential for comfort and preventing conditions like dry, flaky skin or excessive oiliness.
Enhancing Circulation: Massaging skin care products into the skin can improve blood circulation, which can have a positive impact on skin health.
Boosting Self-Care and Relaxation: Skin care routines often involve self-care practices like massages and relaxation techniques. This can contribute to overall mental well-being and stress reduction.
So as you can see having a good skin care routine can have multiple benefits. Don’t feel guilty for wanting to take the time to take better care of yourself.
